In search of…

Back when I was a little kid I remember watching a television series hosted by Leonard Nimoy called “In Search Of…” and the premise of the show was to investigate mysterious phenomena.  Each episode would search for evidence of things like the Bermuda Triangle or go on the hunt for Bigfoot and the Loch Ness Monster.

While the shows were fascinating, especially to me at that age, they rarely (if ever?) found what they were searching for.  The start to our mountain property search is starting to feel a bit like that.

Now that we have the property in Texas, and have a place we can spend the winters in a peaceful, remote desert landscape, we’d like to complement that property with one nestled in a dense forest of evergreens, preferably in the mountains and out of the summer heat.  But most of what we’ve seen in Utah doesn’t quite have the feel we’re looking for.  Here are a few examples of the areas we’ve been exploring…

There have been a few properties that were decent, but nothing yet that has wowed us (like the Texas property did the first time we saw it).  Most of what we have seen are plots in dry, dusty foothills with a scattering of shrubs and western juniper trees.  What we’re really looking for is something in a forest of tall pines and firs.  Something like what you’d find in the Rockies in Colorado or the Cascade Mountains in the Pacific Northwest.

But, while we haven’t found an ideal spot in Utah, the last few weeks have not been a waste.  This state is truly beautiful and one of our favorite places to stay.  When we were down in Parowan, we had a lovely morning hike in the Kolob Canyons section of Zion National Park.  Utah might not have the forest mountain land we’re looking for, but what it does have is simply gorgeous.

This last picture is from the Cedar Breaks National Monument overlook, just a few miles outside Parowan, UT

So, with our time in Utah just about up, our search will continue further north into southeastern Idaho and western Montana.  Based on the listings we’ve seen of land available in those areas we’re optimistic we’ll find something that feels right.  These are a few examples of the properties on our list to check out…

Fingers crossed that we’ll find something to wow us!
